一颗桃花心木红的晶体横卧在这块大冶岩板上，像一艘搁浅的船身——晶面因铁氧化物而呈雾面，棱线笔直如刀锋，一道长长的龙骨脊在光线游走其上时挑起一线细金。 它的下方与四周，是一床淡琥珀色的方解石，尖端泛桃色、凹处近乎无色，承着它的重量。
大冶是铁与铜的地界，颜色正是由此而来：生长期间吸收的细微铁氧化物把大晶体染成牛血色，而底下较晚、较干净的一代则保持蜂蜜般的淡色。 一颗雾面的大晶体卧在明亮的晶簇床上，是一种隔着房间也读得出来的构图。 方解石（CaCO3）莫氏硬度仅 3，沿三个方向完全解理，并且一接触任何酸性物质就会被蚀刻——包括在上面停留太久的指尖。
以 12.7 × 12.4 × 5.6 cm、525 g 而言，这是一件真正的陈列级标本，而非拇指石。 它不附座配送，而这些画面只拍了这一块岩板。
