那些阶梯是生长阶步——某些生长层在横越晶面的途中停了下来，把边缘留成高不足一毫米的台地。 它们把光以与周围晶面不同的角度送回，于是图案随着晶体转动时而炸开、时而消失。 北京在萤石标本上是个不寻常的产地标签。 此矿种莫氏硬度 4，具完全的八面体解理，取拿时请托着母岩，别捏那颗立方体。
