蓝晶石的板状晶体堆满这块巴西标本的整个高度，缘接着缘，宛如一本泡发膨胀的书页。 有些呈现收藏者追求的那种平实矢车菊蓝；有些则因石英与细粒云母挤入其间而褪为铅灰与银灰；另有几片映光时泛出蓝晶石沿解理面特有的珍珠光泽。 背面粗糙未经修整，显然板状晶面那一侧才是展示面。
蓝晶石的化学式为 Al2SiO5，形成于变质岩的高压环境，最著名的特征是硬度随方向而异：沿晶板长轴约为 4.5 至 5，横向则达 6.5 至 7。 钢针从一个方向可以刻划它，换个方向却会滑开。 这项特性为它赢得「二硬石」（disthene）这个旧名，意即两种强度；在有人想用硬工具清理晶板之前，值得先记住这一点。
