一根修长、清澈如水的石英晶体像举起的手臂，从这件小型瑶岗仙晶簇中斜伸出来，身后则由一丛密集的短晶尖填满。 多数晶体无色而且内部干净；散落其间的还有半打烟褐色的个体，深到足以在浅色的邻居之间读作阴影。
石英的烟色来自天然辐照作用于 SiO2 骨架中的微量铝，这正是烟水晶与无色晶体常常共处同一个晶洞的原因——褐色的那几颗，不过是长在矿脉中距离放射性矿物更近之处。 瑶岗仙以萤石更为知名，而这一类石英就在那些钨矿坑道中与之相伴产出。
