立方体叠着立方体，每一颗都较其下者略微错开，如同某种极有耐心之物所砌的阶梯，沿着这件标本向上攀爬。 颜色自上层阶梯的霜面长春花蓝，过渡到下方浓密的靛青晶核，而在晶体最清透之处，方正的紫罗兰色幻影浮现其中——那是一些从未失去棱角的早期立方体。
萤石（CaF2）结晶于等轴晶系，因此一颗立方体一旦以某个取向起始，便会始终保持。 像这样的阶梯状柱体，出现在新生立方体以平行取向于较老晶体的晶面上成核之时，形成瑶岗仙闻名的分枝树状晶习。 紫罗兰色是色心效应——一种晶格缺陷，而非外加的色素——这也是为何色调会从一个生长层到下一层骤然跳变。
