在一臂之遥外，这枚福建萤石看起来是黑的；举到灯前，整团块体转为深紫。 它由两枚块状晶体彼此穿插生长而成，而且没有一个晶面是平的——每一处表面都被蚀刻回一片细小阶梯状立方组成的镶嵌。 较上方那枚晶体的表皮之下藏着较淡的浅紫色分带，乳白色的母岩壳则裹住基部与右侧。
幻影是一次中断的记录：生长停顿，一层杂质薄膜沉降在晶面上，生长再度开始，先前晶体的轮廓便被封存在完成的晶体之内。 蚀刻发生在更晚的时候，流体开始把它们建起来的东西一点点取回。 萤石（CaF2）属等轴晶系，莫氏硬度 4，具完全的八面体解理，因此这么重的一件标本应该从底下托住，而不是捏着边角拿。
