这件香花岭标本上没有任何一处长成平滑的立方体。 每一个萤石晶面都以细密的梯阶与层台向上攀升，让光线在其上碎成一级一级；晶体内部呈蓝绿色，而许多晶体的顶部则因覆着一层深色微晶而泛出银灰色的霜面。 右端萤石让位给一片乳白色、砂糖质感的石英结壳，为整块标本收尾。
这种阶梯状生长记录的是中断：每一道梯阶都标示着富氟流体供应的一次停顿，之后晶体再从略微内缩的位置重新开始。 位于湖南南部的香花岭是一处锡多金属矿系，所产萤石常常正是带着这种深色而闪烁的覆生。 萤石的化学式为 CaF2，莫氏硬度 4，具完全的八面体解理——边角是最脆弱的部分，因此请握持母岩来拿取标本。
