橄榄金色的方解石花苞挤满了这片福建标本的层阶，数以十计，每一枚都是若干小晶体聚生成的圆头状结核，而非单一的尖锐晶尖。 它们坐落在灰奶色母岩上，母岩本身覆着一层细致的糖霜状晶簇，并被低矮的刃状棱脊切开，使黄色在清冷粉白的底色上显得格外温暖。
方解石（CaCO3）几乎能长成它喜欢的任何形状，此处的生长缓慢而一再重新成核，将小菱面体层层堆叠成瘤状集合体，而非延展出几枚大晶体。 柔和的蜜色来自碳酸盐中的微量铁，在花苞聚集最密处颜色更深。 莫氏硬度 3 加上三个方向的完全解理，使它适合陈列于柜中，而非时常上手把玩。
