蜜金色的萤石通透得能透看到另一侧，前方晶面上覆着一片雾化的淡紫丁香色板面，蚀刻在那里向晶体啃出了方形的阶梯。 台阶以直角反复相套，一个方形嵌在另一个方形之内，靠近顶端的一处小凹陷像钥匙孔般张开。 其后偏右，第二枚较小的立方体斜倚入画，琥珀色调也朝那一侧加深。
北京一带的萤石偏向这种温暖的金色，而非湖南的紫色系；而那些阶梯状的表面是溶蚀而非损伤——晶体生长结束之后，晚期流体才在它身上作用，并循着立方体的方向前进。 萤石（CaF2）莫氏硬度 4，八面体解理完全，因此放置时若用力过猛，棱边便会崩缺。 有些萤石会回应紫外光；本件请不要预设如此。
