Xuebaoding, Sichuan, etched aquamarine with mica and feldspar at 8.5 cm and 167 g; a cabinet piece. A pale aquamarine crystal naturally etched into a hollowed, lacy form the supplier calls special, standing over tan mica and white feldspar.
Aquamarine is the blue-green variety of beryl, forming hexagonal prisms with flat terminations; the Chinese material from Xuebaoding and Yunnan pairs it with muscovite and cassiterite.
Mica forms pearly hexagonal books that catch the light between the other crystals. Feldspar forms the blocky, pale crystals that act as a stage for the more colourful minerals in a pegmatite pocket.
Xuebaoding in Pingwu County is the classic Chinese source of scheelite, aquamarine and cassiterite on muscovite, mined from high-altitude greisen veins.
Dimensions place it in the cabinet range, 5.7 × 5.2 × 8.5 cm (2.24 × 2.05 × 3.35 in) and 167 g (5.9 oz). Condition is otherwise as photographed.
