Hunan pyrite with quartz at 15.2 × 10.5 × 13 cm and 2310 g; a large cabinet piece. Keep dry. A large cluster of brassy pyrite cubes and white quartz crystals grown together over a pyrite-rich base, the cubes mirror-faced and the quartz translucent.
Pyrite is the most collected metallic mineral, and the best pieces combine sharp form with a lustre that has not dulled; store it dry to keep it that way.
Good quartz is about hexagonal prisms with clean terminations and the glassy lustre that lets a cluster catch light from every angle.
Hunan is the heartland of Chinese mineral collecting, home to Yaogangxian, Xianghualing and Shangbao, and its fluorite, calcite and sulfides are the benchmark for the country.
The piece is large cabinet in size, 15.2 × 10.5 × 13 cm (5.98 × 4.13 × 5.12 in) and 2310 g (81.5 oz). Condition is otherwise as photographed.
