عن هذه العينة
تغطي شمس أزوريت واحدة كامل وجه هذا اللوح الرقيق تقريبًا: قرص لازوردي يشتدّ سواده في المركز حتى يُقرأ حبرًا، ثم يفتح إلى أزرق زهرة الذرة حيثما لامسه الضوء. السطح مخملي لا زجاجي – نصال مجهرية لا تُحصى منتصبة على أطرافها، أشبه بوَبَر السجادة. وتخترق الزرقةَ جزيرتان أو ثلاث من الطين المضيف الشاحب، فتمنح القرص خطًّا ساحليًّا.
تتكوّن شموس كهذه حين يتبلور الأزوريت بين طبقات حجر طيني ليّن: فلا مجال للبناء إلى أعلى، فتنتشر النصال الشعاعية جانبيًّا في صفيحة مسطّحة. والأزوريت كربونات نحاس، Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2، وصلادته 3.5 إلى 4 على مقياس موس، والصخر المضيف الشاحب ألين منه. لا تغسل شمس مالبونكا أبدًا ولا تمرّر فرشاة على الزرقة؛ نفخة هواء هي التنظيف كله، وينبغي إبقاؤها بعيدة عن أشعة الشمس المباشرة.
يمتدّ اللوح 2.8 × 2.8 سم بسُمك 1.3 سم، ولا يزيد وزنه على 10 غرامات، وهو مثبّت على كتلة الأكريليك الشفافة بلبادة من معجون التثبيت الأبيض. وكل صورة تُظهر هذه الشمس بعينها، مركّبة كما تبدو في الصور.
