قشّة كهف نمت سميكة ثم اكتست: نواة هذه القطعة اليوننانية عمود كالسيت هوابطي، وكل سطح منه مكسوّ ببلورات كهرمانية برتقالية قصيرة تنتهي إلى رؤوس مدبّبة. وبين الكبيرة منها تجلس رشّات مجهرية صدئة من المعدن نفسه، دقيقة كالأشنة، وتتفتّت قدم المخروط إلى كالسيت أصفر مخضرّ فاتح حيث ينفد التلوّن الحديدي الدافئ.
يبدأ الكالسيت الهوابطي حين يتقاطر ماء محمّل بالكربونات في تجويف كهفي، فيبني أنبوبًا مجوّفًا طبقةً بعد طبقة؛ ولا ينمو جيل ثانٍ من البلورات فوق ذلك الأنبوب إلى الخارج إلا لاحقًا، وهو ما يمنح القطعة هيئتها المخروطية المتشوّكة. الكالسيت CaCO3، صلادته 3 على مقياس موس مع انفصام معيّني تام، وهو يذوب حتى في الأحماض الضعيفة — المسح الجاف فقط، ولا خلّ أبدًا.
يرتفع 5.2 سم على قاعدة أثرها 4.1 × 2.9 سم ويزن 126 غ، ويُعرض منتصبًا على قاعدة عرض أكريليك شفافة بمعجون أبيض. ما التقطته العدسة هنا هو ما سيصل إليك.
