Über diese Stufe
Kakaobraun trifft an einer scharfen Innenkante auf Butterkaramell. Zwei große Calcit-Rhomboeder sind hier ineinander gewachsen: das obere tief, fast bitterschokoladenbraun, seine breite Fläche glatt und satiniert; das untere warm bernsteinfarben, von innen erhellt und mit winzigen tröpfchenartigen Kristallen übersät. Ein dritter Kristall, blass rauchrosa und halbdurchsichtig, sitzt links daneben und trägt federartige innere Schleier, und dünne farblose Bänder späteren Wachstums zeichnen mehrere Kanten nach, sobald das Licht sie erfasst.
Braun geht bei Calcit meist auf Eisen und Spuren organischer Substanz zurück, die der Kristall beim Wachsen aufgenommen hat – dasselbe CaCO3, aus dem wasserklarer Doppelspat besteht, nur von seiner Umgebung getönt. Bei Mohshärte 3 und vollkommener rhomboedrischer Spaltbarkeit spaltet er glatt, wenn er fällt oder anstößt; ein gepolstertes Regalbrett ist deshalb besser als ein volles.
