Über diese Stufe
Yaogangxian, Hunan, quartz with fluorite and siderite at 6 cm and 64 g; a small cabinet piece with a colour accent.
Fluorite crystallises in the cubic system and is prized for its saturated colour, glassy lustre and the way zoned phantoms appear when the crystals are back-lit.
Rock crystal is judged on termination quality, clarity and how the crystals sit together, and the Chinese localities have raised the bar on all three. Siderite is recognised by its warm brown tone and slightly curved rhombic faces.
Hunan's tungsten-tin and lead-zinc mines have supplied the world with fluorite, calcite, quartz and sulfide specimens since the 1990s.
Dimensions place it in the small cabinet range, 6 × 3.5 × 4.5 cm (2.36 × 1.38 × 1.77 in) and 64 g (2.3 oz). Condition is otherwise as photographed.
Carbonate: never clean with acid or vinegar.
