Über diese Stufe
Ein einzelner gedrungener Quarzkristall, an beiden Enden terminiert, ruht in einer flachen Mulde aus cremefarbener Drusenmatrix. Die Spitzen sind wasserklar; im Inneren fängt ein weicher weißer Schleier das Licht und macht den Kristall zu einer kleinen Laterne. Über die Vorderfläche ziehen sich schwach Wachstumsstufen, und der Gesteinskrümel darunter funkelt von winzigen Quarzspitzchen.
Daocheng im Westen Sichuans bringt Quarz genau in dieser gedrungenen, beidseitig terminierten Tracht hervor – der Grund, warum Händler zum Kürzel „Herkimer-Stil“ greifen. Volle Endflächen an beiden Enden kann ein Kristall nur ausbilden, wenn er frei in einer offenen oder tongefüllten Kluft schwebt, statt an einer Wand zu wurzeln; die Form ist also ein Protokoll des Hohlraums. Quarz (SiO2) hat Mohshärte 7 und braucht keine Schonung – empfindlich ist der Matrixkrümel.
