Streuen Sie Glut über frischen Schnee, und Sie haben die Wirkung dieser marokkanischen Platte: cremeweiße Barytleisten, Kante an Kante gepflastert, bestreut mit Vanadinit-Kristallen von kaum ein bis zwei Millimetern, jeder ein gedrungenes hexagonales Fässchen mit spiegelnden Flächen, die ein hartes Orangerot zurückwerfen. Dort, wo der Baryt zu den Rändern hin ins Bernsteinfarbene warm wird, verschwindet das Rot beinahe dagegen – und kehrt in dem Moment zurück, in dem die Platte gekippt wird.
Vanadinit, Pb5(VO4)3Cl, ist ein Bleivanadat der oxidierten oberen Stockwerke von Bleilagerstätten – das Vanadium trifft spät ein, vom Grundwasser herangeführt, lange nachdem das primäre Erz an Ort und Stelle war. Es kristallisiert hexagonal und ist mit Mohs 2,5 bis 3 weich; entstauben Sie es daher mit einem weichen Pinsel und halten Sie es weit von jedem Ultraschallreiniger fern. Die Barytleisten darunter wuchsen zuerst und gaben dem Vanadinit seinen Sitz.
Die Platte misst 10,2 × 7,4 × 2,5 cm und wiegt 230 g; ein Sockel ist nicht angebracht. Fotografiert, wie sie ist – und genau diese Platte wird versandt.
