Eine dünne Platte, ganze 1,3 cm stark, von Kante zu Kante mit Fluoritkristallen gepflastert, die von Olivgrün über Rauchgrau bis zu Violett an den Ecken wechseln. Keine der Flächen ist glatt: Jeder Kristall ist in Terrassen aufgebaut, und im jüngeren Wachstum zeichnen sich ältere Phantomumrisse ab. Weiße Mikrokristalle sprenkeln die Zwischenräume, und nahe der Oberkante durchbricht ein glänzend schwarzer Kristall die Oberfläche.
Ein Phantom ist eine buchstäbliche Momentaufnahme – eine Wachstumsfläche, die zum Stillstand kam, einen Film aus Verunreinigungen sammelte und dann unter frischem Fluorit begraben wurde –, das Gespenst im Inneren jedes Kristalls ist also der Umriss, den er früher in seinem Leben hatte. Fluorit aus der Inneren Mongolei wird genau für diese Grün-Violett-Schichtung gesammelt. Fluorit ist CaF2 mit Mohs 4 und vollkommener oktaedrischer Spaltbarkeit; ein Stoß auf eine Ecke hebt ein dreieckiges Blättchen ab, stellen Sie die Platte also dorthin, wo nichts dagegenrollen kann.
Die Platte misst 7,6 × 1,3 × 6,6 cm bei 120 g – leicht für ihre Grundfläche und am besten aufrecht gestellt, damit das Licht streifend über die Terrassen läuft. Fotografiert genau so, wie sie ankommt.
