Über diese Stufe
Kreidig weiße Knollen drängen sich an diesem Stück aus dem Parvati-Tal nach oben wie ein Bestand fossiler Koralle, jeder Lobus gerundet, matt, dem Auge leicht zuckrig. Wo die Auflage dünner wird, schimmert von unten ein blasses Graugrün durch, und einige kleine farblose Blättchen sitzen in den schattigen Mulden zwischen den Türmen. Nichts hier ist glasig; die ganze Oberfläche trägt das weich gepuderte Aussehen von Reif auf einem Fensterrahmen.
Traubiger Quarz entsteht auf diese Weise, wenn kieselsäurereiche Lösung eine Fläche Schicht um Schicht mit mikroskopischen Kristallen überzieht, statt eine Handvoll großer wachsen zu lassen. Das matte Finish ist Geometrie und nicht Verwitterung – Tausende winziger Endflächen streuen das Licht in alle Richtungen zugleich. Quarz ist SiO2 mit Mohshärte 7 und verlangt nichts weiter als einen weichen Pinsel. Material in dieser Tracht kommt aus den hochalpinen Tälern von Himachal Pradesh im westlichen Himalaya.
