Lobi fusi si arrampicano l'uno sull'altro come una colonna di cavolfiore ambrato, e ogni millimetro quadrato della superficie si scompone in minute terminazioni appuntite che catturano la luce come un luccichio zuccherino. Il colore passa dal miele caldo lungo le creste al caramello più profondo negli incavi, con bordi traslucidi color paglia dove le punte cristalline più sottili sporgono.
Lo Yunnan produce croste carbonatiche esattamente con questo abito: aggregati arrotondati, con punte a rosetta, depositati da acque sotterranee a lenta infiltrazione. Aragonite e calcite condividono l'unica formula CaCO3 e differiscono soltanto per il modo in cui i loro atomi si impilano, perciò un esemplare come questo non può essere attribuito all'una o all'altra a occhio nudo; lo indichiamo onestamente come aragonite/calcite finché non sarà eseguita un'analisi adeguata. In ogni caso è tenero, attorno a 3-4 della scala di Mohs, e mal sopporta acidi e urti.
