Ogni faccia di questo cuneo è una scalinata. Gli spigoli dei cubi arretrano in terrazze parallele lungo la parte anteriore del pezzo, con gradini profondi solo pochi millimetri, così la superficie si legge come un’architettura più che come un unico cristallo. Il colore è un tenue bianco-lilla, più vicino al vetro smerigliato che a una tinta decisa, e le chiazze bianche e polverose lungo i bordi superiori danno all’esemplare quella grana zuccherina da cui prende il nome.
Una crescita a gradini come questa avviene quando una faccia del cubo cresce più in fretta ai bordi che al centro, con uno strato che si accumula sull’altro prima che alcuno riesca a chiudersi: è lo stesso meccanismo che produce i cristalli a tramoggia nell’halite. La fluorite ha durezza 4 Mohs e sfaldatura ottaedrica perfetta, e su un pezzo terrazzato gli angoli dei gradini sono i punti esposti, perciò lo sostenga da sotto ogni volta che lo sposta.
Misura 5,1 × 5,1 × 2,8 cm e pesa 70 g, un cuneo solido che riempie il palmo, senza supporto in dotazione. Ripreso in mano e non montato, è questo l’esemplare che acquista.
