Una catena di rombi di rodocrosite rosa salmone zigzaga su questa piccola placca come una fila di pietre da guado, ogni cristallo rivestito da una ricrescita bianca e zuccherina che ne arrotonda gli spigoli. Solo il maggiore, in alto a sinistra, resta abbastanza limpido da mostrare il nucleo color anguria che ha sotto; gli altri appaiono rosa pallido contro la drusa di quarzo grigio su cui sono appollaiati.
La rodocrosite è carbonato di manganese, MnCO3, e il rosa nasce direttamente dal manganese della struttura, non da un'impurezza in tracce. È tenera, Mohs da 3,5 a 4, con sfaldatura perfetta in tre direzioni: un rombo che cade si divide lungo un piano netto invece di scheggiarsi. Guardi lungo il bordo destro e troverà un singolo cristallo di fluorite violetta cresciuto dentro la drusa, con puntini ottonati di solfuri poco distanti e una crosta di minerale scuro a tenere l'angolo opposto.
La placca misura 4,8 × 1,3 × 3,6 cm per 35 g, tanto sottile da leggersi come una fetta, appoggiata in verticale su un blocchetto di acrilico trasparente. Quello che vede fotografato è quello che lascia lo scaffale.
