Due bracci si sollevano da un fusto comune formando una V ampia, ciascuno costruito da migliaia di protuberanze e uncini di rame fusi tra loro, con la luce del giorno che passa attraverso gli spazi vuoti. Il metallo è invecchiato in un caldo rosso mattone, più scuro negli incavi, e piccoli granuli cristallini bianchi restano aggrappati nelle rientranze. Appiattito a circa un centimetro e mezzo, l'insieme si comporta come un merletto di metallo aperto più che come un blocco compatto.
Il rame è uno dei pochi metalli che in natura si presenta allo stato non combinato e cristallizza nel sistema cubico; cresciuto in una frattura stretta, si ramifica lungo le direzioni cristallografiche e produce esattamente questa forma arborescente. È tenero, con durezza Mohs da 2,5 a 3, e leggermente malleabile, quindi un ramo premuto si piega invece di spezzarsi. Lo maneggi il meno possibile: i grassi della pelle offuscano la patina, e la superficie è meglio lasciarla come l'ha lasciata la miniera.
Il ventaglio si estende per 10,7 cm, è alto 8,1 cm e spesso 1,5 cm, per 125 g. Tutte le fotografie qui presenti ritraggono questo singolo ventaglio di rame, tenuto in mano per dare la scala.
