La pirite ottone-oro affolla la faccia di questa piccola placca spagnola, cristallo dopo cristallo serrati spalla a spalla finché non resta quasi più un vuoto. Fini striature parallele solcano ogni faccia e catturano la luce in bande strette. Dove l’oro si dirada, cristalli di quarzo limpidi come acqua si incuneano negli interstizi, piccoli e tozzi anziché colonnari, e lungo un bordo sopravvive un orlo di roccia ocra.
Le striature ripagano l’uso della lente. La pirite, FeS2, alterna facce di cubo e di piritoedro mentre cresce, e i due abiti si intercalano in gradini sottili che registrano ogni cambio. Con durezza Mohs da 6 a 6,5 il minerale è duro ma fragile, e la sua lucentezza metallica si opacizza sotto dita umide: una vetrinetta asciutta e mani asciutte mantengono vivo l’oro per decenni.
La placca misura 6,1 × 2,9 × 3,6 cm e pesa 105 g, una comoda misura da tenere nel palmo, mostrata qui fra pollice e indice; non è prevista alcuna base. Ciò che vede nelle fotografie è il pezzo che imballeremo e spediremo.
