Quella che sembra seta grigia tesa su questa placca della Mongolia Interna è boulangerite: migliaia di aghi metallici sottili come capelli, i più lunghi ben oltre il centimetro, deposti in tappeti incrociati. Piccole punte di quarzo incolore emergono fra le fibre, alcune tinte di un lilla appena accennato, e granuli ottonati di pirite scintillano lungo il margine inferiore e attorno al bordo.
La boulangerite (Pb5Sb4S11) è un solfosale di piombo e antimonio che quasi mai costruisce un cristallo squadrato: cresce invece in questi ventagli aciculari infeltriti. Con durezza da 2,5 a 3 Mohs le fibre si schiacciano sotto un pollice distratto e non tornano più indietro, quindi soffi via la polvere invece di spazzolarla e non lasci mai che il materiale d’imballaggio prema sui tappeti.
La placca corre per 6,6 × 6,1 × 4,3 cm e pesa 175 g, mostrata fra due dita nella fotografia per dare la scala e fornita senza supporto. Nelle immagini non compare nient’altro che questo campione.
