この標本について
本を開くように二つに分けられた、一つのアンモナイト。マダガスカル・マハジャンガ産の白亜紀の殻を切断・研磨し、左右が鏡像になる一対の展示標本に仕立てたものです。生き物が築いた房のひとつひとつが、いまはそれぞれ小さな晶洞になっています。蜂蜜色の方解石結晶が並ぶ房もあれば、赤錆色の堆積物が底に溜まった房もあり、その全体を瑪瑙化した殻壁が包んで、キャラメルとクリームの色に磨き上がっています。
螺旋の内巻きは、二つの面それぞれの中心にくっきりと残ります。1億年前の軟体動物の構造を断面で見せる自然史の資料としても、棚や机にそのまま置ける揃いの一対としても成り立つ標本です。
合わせたサイズはおよそ11.9 × 3.6 × 13.7 cm、重量は471 gです。二つ揃えてお届けします。掲載写真は現物の一対です。
