この標本について
細いエメラルドの柱が一本、この小さな岩塊の表を斜めに走っています。淡いミントグリーンの結晶と、締まった雪のように見える白く粗い結晶質の母岩との対比が身上です。結晶は長さ2 cmほどのやや扁平な柱で、色は中ほどで最も濃く、両端へ向かうにつれて薄れていきます。上の縁の近くにはもう一本、短い緑の板が顔を出し、根元には雲母質の暗い斑点が見えます。
エメラルドは、クロムまたはバナジウムによって発色した緑柱石の変種で、化学式はBe3Al2Si6O18。まさにこのように、空隙に自立するのではなく母岩に閉じ込められた六方柱として育ちます。母岩に残されたままの結晶は、単体で外れたものより多くを語ります。どのように養われ、周りに何が育ったのかを読み取れるからです。硬度7.5〜8の柱そのものは丈夫で、脆いのはむしろ取り巻く母岩のほうです。
