インドネシア産の未加工のぶどう瑪瑙で、鮮やかなラベンダーから濃い菫色までのぶどう状の房が連なります。球状の「粒」は緻密に集まった微細な結晶からなり、あらゆる角度から光を捉えて絹のような星明かりのきらめきを見せます。底部には天然の母岩が残り、滑らかな球面と対をなしています。

この標本について
小さな球が数百も、このインドネシア産の塊にひしめいています。互いに押し合うほど密に並び、色はやわらかなラベンダー。光の当たるところではペリウィンクルの青紫へ、下縁では淡い灰緑へと移ろいます。表面はガラス質ではなく繻子のような艶です。一粒一粒が微細な石英の結晶の集合体なので、光を鏡のように返すのではなく散らすのです。右上の張り出しのあたりには、白い晶洞状の細かい結晶が小さく顔を出しています。
取引の場ではぶどう瑪瑙と呼ばれますが、実体はぶどう状に育った玉髄です。この形はいっさい成形も研磨もされていません。丸い粒は、火山岩の空洞の中でシリカが固まったときのそのままの姿です。玉髄はモース硬度6.5〜7ほどと硬く、手入れは球の隙間にやわらかい乾いた刷毛を入れるくらいで足ります。ほこりがたまるのは、まさにその隙間です。
展示面は 7.1 × 6.6 cm、奥行きは 3.0 cm、重さは 125 g。割れた底面で自然に据わり、スタンドは要りません。写真に写っているのは、お届けするその個体そのものです。
