この標本について
一つのラブラドライトの塊から、二匹のエンゼルフィッシュが前後に連なって泳ぎ出しています。魚体は面を重ねるように削り出され、鰭には細い平行の彫り目が刻まれています。光のほうへ向けると、先頭の魚体を広い一枚の鮮烈な青が満たし、その下にはもう一つ、孔雀の目のような閃光が現れます。それ以外の部分は、黒い筋の走るくすんだオリーブ灰色に見えます。彫り手は外周を粗いまま残しており、磨かれた魚が原石の長石を突き破って出てくるように見えます。
この青は顔料ではありません。ラブラドライトは斜長石の一種で、冷えていく過程で内部が極めて薄い層へ交互に分離しました。石に入った光がその層で反射し、互いに干渉することで、動かすたびに移ろい、また消えていく細い帯状の色だけが返ってきます。モース硬度は 6〜6.5 で、明るい艶に磨き上がりますが、劈開の方向への衝撃は苦手です。
彫刻の寸法は 10.2 × 8.9 × 3.0 cm、重量は 350 g。底面が平らに切られているので、支えなしで自立します。写真はこの一点を撮影したもので、閃光の現れ方はこの個体だけのものです。
