この標本について
クルミよりわずかに大きいほどの、淡いクリーム色をした母岩の低い盛り上がり。その表面を、あらゆる色に変色した黄銅鉱の結晶が鎧のように覆っています。窪みには青銅色と古金色、露出した面には薔薇色とマゼンタ、被膜が最も薄いところでは青緑と菫色がひらめきます。右上にある一回り大きな結晶が、その色をもっとも見事に見せています。銅を思わせるピンクから金、そして紫へと、一枚の結晶面の中で色を移していく幅広い楔形です。
この色は顔料ではなく、光の干渉によるものです。黄銅鉱 CuFeS2 は風化してナノメートル単位の厚さしかない酸化被膜をつくり、その上面と下面で反射した光が、波長ごとに打ち消し合い、また強め合います。濡れたアスファルトに浮かぶ油膜と同じ理屈です。被膜がきわめて薄いため、簡単に拭き取れてしまいます。布も、超音波洗浄も、酸も使わないでください。乾いた空気と柔らかな刷毛だけで十分です。
寸法は 5.6 × 3.3 × 3.8 cm、重量 79 g とコンパクトで、産地は江西省徳興です。手のひらに収まり、灯りの下でゆっくりと向きを変えるほどに応えてくれます。台座は付属しません。写真に写っている変色は、この標本自身のものです。
