Inner Mongolia old-stock double-terminated quartz with calcite at 61 g; a small cabinet piece with an unusual form.
Rock crystal is judged on termination quality, clarity and how the crystals sit together, and the Chinese localities have raised the bar on all three.
Calcium carbonate in its rhombohedral form, calcite is soft (Mohs 3) and takes a bright vitreous to pearly lustre on fresh faces.
The Huanggangliang skarn district of Inner Mongolia is one of the great mineral finds of the 21st century, known for fluorite, calcite, garnet and rare species.
By size it is small cabinet, 5.1 × 4.9 × 3.2 cm (2.01 × 1.93 × 1.26 in) and 61 g (2.2 oz). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.
Carbonate: never clean with acid or vinegar.
