Shangbao, Hunan, pyrite with quartz at 10.3 cm and 150 g; a cabinet plate. Keep dry. A plate of white quartz crystals fanning outward in slender prisms, with brassy pyrite cubes set into the grey base beneath them.
Pyrite grows as cubes, pyritohedra and octahedra with a brassy metallic lustre; Chinese pyrite is known for sharp, mirror-faced crystals.
Quartz is the most collected mineral on earth for good reason: sharp hexagonal prisms, bright terminations and endless variation between localities.
Hunan is the heartland of Chinese mineral collecting, home to Yaogangxian, Xianghualing and Shangbao, and its fluorite, calcite and sulfides are the benchmark for the country.
By size it is cabinet, 10.3 × 6.2 × 2.7 cm (4.06 × 2.44 × 1.06 in) and 150 g (5.3 oz). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.
