Shangbao, Hunan, pyrite with quartz at 15 cm and 1450 g; a large cabinet piece. Keep dry. A large cluster of white, translucent quartz crystals with brassy pyrite cubes set into the grey base at the upper left, the quartz points bright and the pyrite mirror-faced.
Iron sulfide with a brass-gold colour, pyrite is heavy, bright and geometrically satisfying, with striated faces on the best crystals.
Quartz is the most collected mineral on earth for good reason: sharp hexagonal prisms, bright terminations and endless variation between localities.
Hunan is the heartland of Chinese mineral collecting, home to Yaogangxian, Xianghualing and Shangbao, and its fluorite, calcite and sulfides are the benchmark for the country.
Dimensions place it in the large cabinet range, 15 × 11.5 × 9 cm (5.91 × 4.53 × 3.54 in) and 1450 g (51.1 oz). Otherwise the piece is sold exactly as photographed.
