Shangbao, Hunan, pyrite with green quartz at 25 × 11 × 22 cm and 8550 g including the stand; a large cabinet display piece. Keep dry.
Pyrite grows as cubes, pyritohedra and octahedra with a brassy metallic lustre; Chinese pyrite is known for sharp, mirror-faced crystals.
Rock crystal is judged on termination quality, clarity and how the crystals sit together, and the Chinese localities have raised the bar on all three.
Hunan is the heartland of Chinese mineral collecting, home to Yaogangxian, Xianghualing and Shangbao, and its fluorite, calcite and sulfides are the benchmark for the country.
By size it is large cabinet, 25 × 11 × 22 cm (9.84 × 4.33 × 8.66 in) and 8550 g (301.6 oz). Condition is otherwise as photographed.
