Hunan quartz-calcite-mica at 163 g; a cabinet piece for the UV collector.
Good quartz is about hexagonal prisms with clean terminations and the glassy lustre that lets a cluster catch light from every angle.
Calcite is the most shape-shifting of common minerals: over 800 crystal forms have been described, and Chinese localities produce many of the best. Mica books, silvery to bronze, are the usual companion of pegmatite minerals and add a flash of pearly lustre to the piece.
Hunan's tungsten-tin and lead-zinc mines have supplied the world with fluorite, calcite, quartz and sulfide specimens since the 1990s.
The piece is cabinet in size, 8.2 × 6.1 × 4.4 cm (3.23 × 2.40 × 1.73 in) and 163 g (5.7 oz). Condition is otherwise as photographed.
Carbonate: never clean with acid or vinegar.
