この標本について
白亜のような淡い空色が、この貴州省産の標本のすべてを覆っています。被膜の下には埋もれた形がまだ読み取れ、鈍いオリーブ褐色の塊や錐状の結晶が皮殻を押し上げています。表面そのものはつや消しで柔らかく見え、ギブス石が羽毛のような膜となって広がったところではかすかに繊維状です。幅より背が高く、わずかに傾いているため、塔のような佇まいになっています。
ギブス石 Al(OH)3 は、ボーキサイトをアルミニウム鉱石たらしめている鉱物です。地中には豊富にありながら、標本ケースで見かけることはほとんどありません。結晶化した鑑賞に堪える標本は実際に珍しく、この一点では青みを帯びた色合いが二度見の価値を生んでいます。軟らかくモース硬度はおよそ2.5〜3.5、淡い被膜は手の脂で艶を失います。洗わずに、下部を持って乾いたまま埃を払ってください。
立てた状態で 12.5 × 7.5 × 5.7 cm、重量は 184 g。かさのわりに軽く、縦に置いたときがいちばん映えます。スタンドは付属しません。写真はこのギブス石そのもので、代わりの品ではありません。
