この標本について
藍晶石の刃が、このブラジル産の塊の高さいっぱいに積み重なり、水を吸って膨らんだ本のページのように隙間なく詰まっています。コレクターが求める平らな矢車菊色の青を見せるものもあれば、石英と細かな雲母が間に割り込んだところでは錫色や銀灰色へと淡くなります。いくつかは劈開に沿って、藍晶石特有の真珠のような光沢を返します。裏面は粗いまま手が入っておらず、見せるべき面は刃の並ぶ側だと一目でわかります。
藍晶石は Al2SiO5、変成岩の中で高い圧力を受けて生まれる鉱物です。方向によって硬さが変わることで知られ、刃の長さ方向ではおよそ4.5〜5、それを横切る方向では6.5〜7になります。鋼の針は一方向では傷をつけ、もう一方向では滑って逃げてしまいます。この性質から、二つの強さを意味する「ディスシーン」という古い呼び名が生まれました。硬い道具で刃を掃除しようとする前に、思い出しておきたい話です。
