Over dit exemplaar
Een witte knol in de vorm van een ganzenei, aan één zijde opengelegd om te tonen wat erin schuilging. De buitenkorst is knobbelig doorschijnend kwarts, half suiker en half glas, en sluit er als een kap overheen; de holte die hij beschermt kleurt diep amberkaramel, dezelfde botryoïdale textuur herhaald in warm bruin waar het wit is weggenomen. Het contrast tussen die twee is waar het bij dit stuk om draait.
Agaat en chalcedoon zijn microkristallijn silica, SiO2, laag over laag afgezet terwijl silicarijk vocht een holte binnendringt en die van de wanden naar binnen toe bekleedt. Het ijzer dat onderweg wordt opgenomen is de gebruikelijke bron van amber- en bruintinten als deze. Met Mohs 6,5–7 hoort het bij het duurzaamste wat u in een vitrine kunt zetten: geen splijting, en hard genoeg om een terloopse kras te negeren.
4,6 × 3,8 × 3,8 cm en 85 g, op kit gezet op de getoonde doorzichtige acrylkubus. Uitsluitend dit exemplaar is gefotografeerd.
