Over dit exemplaar
Baksteenrood in de kern en donkerder tot chocoladebruin waar de inwendige bestuiving het dichtst zit, vervaagt het dominante kristal langs elke afgeschuinde rand tot doorschijnend bleekroze. Het brede bovenvlak is glazig en licht getrapt, en aan de voet dringt een knoop van kleinere kristallen samen waar het stuk uit zijn holte losraakte. Het rood zit in de calciet en niet erop – ijzeroxide dat werd meegenomen terwijl het kristal groeide.
Een groeiende calciet neemt op wat er in de vloeistof om zich heen zweeft, waardoor een kristal door het lichaam heen ondoorzichtig kan uitvallen en helder blijft langs de als laatste gegroeide randen – precies het patroon dat u hier ziet, met de bestuiving die naar elke afschuining toe uitdooft. Met hardheid 3 en perfecte romboëdrische splijting in drie richtingen is het zacht genoeg om door zowat elke buur op dezelfde plank bekrast te worden; geef het dus ruimte.
