Blokkige calcietkristallen met beitelvormige toppen liggen als dakpannen over een plaat van 14 cm uit Daye, melkwit aan het ene uiteinde en rokerig grijshelder door het grootste kristal, met een naad honingoranje kristallen langs de onderrand. Calciet uit Daye antwoordt vaak op kortgolvig uv-licht met een roze gloed.

Over dit exemplaar
Gedrongen calcietkristallen overlappen elkaar over deze plaat uit Daye als ijsschotsen die op een rivieroever zijn opgestuwd, elk eindigend in een scherpe beitelvormige terminatie in plaats van in een punt. De kleur verschuift terwijl u het stuk draait: links mat melkwit, dan rokerig en bijna waterhelder door het grootste kristal heen, waar inwendige groeilijnen als fijne evenwijdige strepen zichtbaar worden. Langs de onderrand loopt een naad van honingoranje kristallen en donkere korrels die de hele onderzijde verwarmt.
Calciet (CaCO3) is zacht met hardheid 3 volgens Mohs en splijt schoon in drie richtingen; het hoort dus op een plank en niet in een zak. Het ertsveld van Daye in Hubei is een skarnsysteem, en de calcieten daar dragen zoveel sporen mangaan dat een roze tot rode reactie onder kortgolvig ultraviolet licht veel voorkomt – de moeite waard om met een eigen lamp te testen voordat u iemand een lichtshow belooft.
De plaat meet 14,0 × 6,4 × 5,1 cm en weegt 445 g, zwaar genoeg om zonder hulp op een plank te blijven staan. Er wordt geen voet meegeleverd; elke foto hier is van deze plaat en van geen andere gemaakt.
