A clear hyalite cap sits along the upper edge of a strongly porous brown matrix. Rounded transparent growths merge across the top, catching curved highlights, while the much larger lower portion exposes holes and rough earthy surfaces. The cap is asymmetrical rather than evenly centered.
Compared with a fully coated specimen, this piece shows more of its bare matrix. The clear mineral projects slightly beyond one side, making the boundary between opal and rock easy to follow. The hyalite is reported to fluoresce green, while its daylight appearance is a small clear area above brown matrix.
Locality: Mexico. Weight: 10 g (0.35 oz). Dimensions: 2 × 1 × 2 cm (20 × 10 × 20 mm; 0.79 × 0.39 × 0.79 in).
