Bleeklila kristallen bedekken deze plaat uit Guizhou in overlappende waaiers, elk een klein afgeplat speertje met een beitelvormige punt, tegen zijn buren aan leunend tot het hele oppervlak berijpt lijkt. Saffraangele korstjes vullen het laagland ertussen – verscheidene ervan zacht en poederig – en midden op de plaat steekt een groepje grijsbruine blaadjes omhoog waar de bedekking wegdunt.
Gips is CaSO4·2H2O en het zachtste mineraal dat de meeste verzamelaars in huis hebben: Mohs 2, monoklien, met een vingernagel te krassen en door afvegen zo dof gemaakt. Een lila zweem die gelijkmatig door een hele korst loopt is ongewoon, want het meeste gips komt kleurloos, wit of amberkleurig binnen, en de gele korstjes geven het stuk een tweede kleur zonder dat er ook maar iets aan gepolijst is. Bewaar het droog, maar niet boven de verwarming – gips verliest langzaam zijn water en wordt krijtachtig in een hete, droge kast.
De plaat is 7,4 × 4,8 × 3,8 cm en 90 g, ongemonteerd en stabiel plat liggend. Niets op deze foto's hoort bij een ander stuk: wat u ziet, is wat er verzonden wordt.
