Strogele calcietbladen overlappen elkaar op deze plaat uit Hunan in afgeplatte, licht gewelfde vellen; elk blad ontmoet het volgende onder een hoek, waardoor het hele aggregaat opengaat als een bloem die halverwege het ontluiken is stilgezet. De bladen zijn doorschijnend en glasachtig langs hun verse randen, en verkleuren naar amber waar ze naar het midden toe dikker worden. In enkele tussenruimtes heeft zich een licht roestkleurig vliesje afgezet.
Verzamelaars noemen dit de bloembladhabitus: calciet gegroeid als brede, afgeplatte romboëders die zich in overlappende lagen opstapelen in plaats van blokkige losse kristallen te vormen. Calciet heeft hardheid 3 op de schaal van Mohs en volkomen splijting in drie richtingen, dus een stoot levert een schone splijting op in plaats van een schilfer. Houd het stuk uit de buurt van azijn, ontkalkers en huishoudreinigers – verdund zuur etst de glans zo van die vlakken af.
