About this specimen
Guizhou calcite with yttrofluorite at 12 cm and 480 g; a large cabinet plate. A plate of golden-tan quartz druse with pale, translucent calcite rhombs standing on it and the yttrian fluorite the supplier names scattered across the surface.
Calcium carbonate in its rhombohedral form, calcite is soft (Mohs 3) and takes a bright vitreous to pearly lustre on fresh faces.
Yttrofluorite is the yttrium-bearing variety of fluorite; the rare-earth content gives it a distinctive body colour and often a fluorescent response under UV.
Guizhou's Qinglong antimony-fluorite district is the classic source for creedite sprays and continues to produce zoned fluorite and calcite.
Dimensions place it in the large cabinet range, 12 × 8 × 5.5 cm (4.72 × 3.15 × 2.17 in) and 480 g (16.9 oz). Otherwise the piece is sold exactly as photographed.
