Flesgroene epidoot vormt het lichaam van dit kleine stuk uit Sichuan en verdonkert tot bijna zwart waar zij dikker wordt; daaroverheen ligt een spreiding van kleurloze kwartspunten, kort en scherp begrensd, die het licht vangen als rijp neergestreken op mos. Enkele kwartsplekken dragen een warme bruingele tint waar ijzer ze heeft gekleurd.
Stukken als dit worden vaak als tuinkwarts verkocht, vanuit de gedachte dat het groen door het heldere kristal heen groeit. Hier ligt de verhouding andersom, en dat mag rustig hardop gezegd worden: de epidoot is de matrix, een korst waarop en waartussen het kwarts is gegroeid, geen pluim die in één kristal is opgesloten. Epidoot is een ijzerhoudend calcium-aluminiumsilicaat, en juist dat ijzer stuurt de kleur van pistache richting zwart. Beide mineralen zijn hard – kwarts 7, epidoot 6 tot 7 – zodat het stuk hantering goed verdraagt.
Het meet 5,0 × 4,0 × 3,0 cm en weegt 130 g, ongemonteerd. De foto toont het stuk dat u ontvangt.
