Rozetten van fijne naalden bedekken deze plaat uit Guizhou van rand tot rand, elk een strak stralend bosje met een witte kern, en samen een zacht kakibruine massa die van een afstand haast op mos lijkt. Daaroverheen liggen de popcornvormen waaraan het materiaal zijn naam dankt: ronde, roomwitte knobbels, waarvan er verscheidene bleek botergeel omrand en aangeslagen zijn, en één opengebroken tot een ring rond een holle kern.
Gips is CaSO4·2H2O, en bij Mohs 2 is het zacht genoeg om met een vingernagel te tekenen. Die zachtheid verklaart waarom naaldvormige waaiers als deze zo makkelijk beschadigen, en waarom het stuk het best staat waar niets langs de naaldpunten kan strijken. Bewaar het droog en spoel het nooit af: gips lost licht op in water.
Een brede, eenzijdige plaat met één aanzichtvlak, ongemonteerd aangeboden en in de hand gefotografeerd zodat de spreiding van de rozetten in één oogopslag afleesbaar is. De foto's documenteren deze plaat zelf.
