Over dit exemplaar
Draai dit stuk onder een lamp en het oppervlak gedraagt zich als olie op water: het chalcopyriet draagt een aanslagfilm die van messinggoud via magenta en blauwgroen naar diep brons loopt en met elke graad kanteling verschuift. Bovenop zitten een tiental kleine waterheldere calcietkristallen in de holtes tussen de metalen bulten, met scherpe ribben als vlak tegenwicht voor al die kleur.
De iriserende glans is een aanslaglaag van een fractie van een micron dik, ontstaan doordat het koper-ijzersulfide oxideert; het messinggeel eronder is de werkelijke kleur van chalcopyriet. Omdat die film zo dun is, maken huidvet en wrijven hem dof, dus pak het stuk bij de ruwe onderzijde vast. De calciet is met hardheid 3 (Mohs) de zachtste van de twee en splijt gemakkelijk.
Het stuk meet 5,6 × 3,4 × 4,6 cm en weegt 165 g; het is in de hand gefotografeerd, zonder sokkel. Deze foto's zijn uitsluitend van dit exemplaar gemaakt.
