Twee armen verheffen zich uit een gemeenschappelijke steel in een brede V, elk opgebouwd uit duizenden vergroeide koperknoppen en -haken, met daglicht dat tussen de openingen door schijnt. Het metaal is verkleurd tot een warm baksteenrood, donkerder in de holten, en in de nissen kleven kleine witte kristalkorrels. Afgeplat tot ongeveer anderhalve centimeter gedraagt het geheel zich als open metaalkant in plaats van als een massief brok.
Koper is een van de weinige metalen die ongebonden in de aarde voorkomen, en het kristalliseert in het kubische stelsel; gegroeid in een nauwe spleet vertakt het zich langs kristallografische richtingen en levert het precies deze boomvormige gedaante op. Met Mohs 2,5 tot 3 is het zacht en licht smeedbaar, zodat een ingedrukte tak eerder buigt dan breekt. Raak het zo weinig mogelijk aan – huidvetten maken het patina dof, en het oppervlak blijft het best zoals de mijn het achterliet.
De waaier spant 10,7 cm in de breedte, staat 8,1 cm hoog en is 1,5 cm dik, bij 125 g. Alle fotografie hier is van deze ene koperwaaier, in de hand gehouden om de schaal te tonen.
