Twee waterheldere kwartspunten rijzen op uit een dunne donkere plaat als een paar geheven handen – de langste breedgeschouderd en volledig getermineerd, de kleinere schuin weghellend. Geen van beide is groen. De kleur in dit stuk hoort bij het bed waarop ze groeiden: een mat van donker olijfgroene tot bijna zwarte, mesvormige kristallen die over de hele lengte van de plaat doorloopt en het doorzichtige kwarts scherp doet uitkomen.
Maoniuping in Sichuan is een carbonatietsysteem met zeldzame aardmetalen, en daarom staat het kwarts er in gezelschap van mineralen die u bij de klassieke sulfidemijnen van Hunan niet tegenkomt. Kwarts is SiO2 met hardheid 7 op de schaal van Mohs, hard genoeg dat deze terminaties hun spiegelvlakken ook na de winning nog dragen; het kwetsbare deel van dit stuk is de dunne matrix, niet de kristallen.
Het stuk meet 4,8 × 3,3 × 3,8 cm en weegt 40 g, en het staat op het getoonde transparante acrylblokje, vastgezet met kit die er schoon af te pellen is. Zowel het kwarts als het blokje eronder zijn die van deze afbeeldingen.
