Kleurloze kwartspunten rijzen op uit een bed van messinggeel pyriet waarvan de vlakken een olieachtige aanslag in goud, groen en brons dragen. Een Indiaas stuk op een doorzichtige acrylstandaard; het iriserende laagje is maar enkele micrometers dik, dus houd het droog en stof het af in plaats van het te wassen.

De basis van dit Indiase stuk is een korst van messinggeel pyriet waarvan de oppervlakken een olieachtige aanslag hebben gekregen, goud dat overgaat in groen en brons naargelang de hoek waaronder u het houdt. Uit dat bed groeien kleurloze kwartskristallen: twee lange, goed gevormde punten die omhoog en naar achteren reiken, een lage glasachtige koepel daartussen, en groepjes fijnere naalden die vanaf de flanken uitwaaieren.
De regenboog op het pyriet (FeS2) is door niemand aangebracht. Het is een uiterst dun oxidatielaagje op de kristalvlakken, en het splitst wit licht ongeveer zoals een zeepbel dat doet. Juist dat laagje is het kwetsbare deel van het specimen: vegen, poetsen of nat reinigen haalt het er meteen af. Houd het stuk droog en gebruik hooguit een zachte kwast. Het kwarts, hardheid 7 op de schaal van Mohs, vraagt om niets.
Het meet 6,9 × 4,9 × 3,4 cm en weegt 105 g, gepresenteerd op de afgebeelde doorzichtige acrylstandaard. Alle foto's tonen dit ene stuk, niet een representatief voorbeeld.
